The research, led by researchers from Oxford and Bristol universities and published in the journal PLOS ONE, is one of the first of its kind to look at the effects of moderate drinking during pregnancy. WOMEN who drink even a couple of glasses of wine a week during pregnancy are risking a two-point drop in their child's IQ, a study suggests. The research is some of the strongest evidence yet in the furious debate that has seen mothers-to-be bombarded with contradictory advice on drinking. By using a novel technique of "genetic randomisation", scientists were able to see through a statistical fog to conclude that most children have genes that make it risky for their mothers to drink even a small amount during pregnancy.. Australian women continue to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol during pregnancy, a new study reveals. Research by the Australian Institute of Family Studies has found 18 per cent of women smoked and 38 per cent of women drank alcohol while pregnant, with younger mothers more likely to smoke and older mothers more likely to drink while pregnant. MAJOR liquor retailers nationally have banded together to educate Australians about the dangers of drinking while pregnant. The joint initiative between the Federal Department of Health and Aging and DrinkWise Australia, will promote the message "It is safest not to drink alcohol while pregnant". Major liquor retailers will hand out literature with alcohol purchases to increase understanding on the risks of women drinking alcohol while pregnant.

1 in 13 Pregnant Women Drinks Alcohol 20 July 2012
Older and more educated women are more likely to drink alcohol during pregnancy, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study published Friday. About one in 13 women drink while pregnant, according to the study, and out of those women, one in four reportedly binge drink. The researchers examined more than 340,000 self-reported surveys that were a part of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System of data from women between the ages of 18 and 44.

While most mothers-to-be had a low alcohol intake, one-in-five drank moderately, and a small number drank heavily, the study found.Lead author Jennifer Powers, of the University of Newcastle, said there was a lack of clear evidence of the risks of low to moderate alcohol intake during pregnancy and this left women in "no person's land" on the issue.
